Program Description

This one year, part-time, post-graduate certificate training program is designed for mental health professionals who seek to deepen their knowledge of pastoral counseling and to enhance their ability to integrate the spiritual dimension into their clinical work.  The program will focus upon the interrelated complexities and interaction of the psychological and spiritual, religious dimensions of the human journey as manifested in the therapeutic process.

Who Should Apply

The program is open to mental health professionals who have achieved a minimum of master’s level proficiency and licensure or a limited license in counseling, psychology, or marriage and family therapy.

Program Goals

The program will enable participants to:

· Increase their understanding of spiritual and religious faith development within the context of human development

· Learn methods to assess religious and spiritual development and the interaction of psychological and spiritual dynamics

· Deepen their awareness of their personal spiritual journey and spirituality and the ways in which it interacts with their clinical work

· Develop greater competency to work with religious and spiritual issues to facilitate healing

Program Components

The program consists of two interrelated components:

· Didactic Seminars

· Integrative Case Conference/Group Supervision

Schedule

This three term program is scheduled for Thursday afternoons from 1:00-4:00p.m.

· Term I:           September 20, 2007—December 6, 2007

· Term II           January 10, 2008—March 13, 2008

· Term III:        March 27, 2008—June 12, 2008

Seminars

One seminar will be offered during each of the three terms.

· Perspectives on Spiritual and Religious Development in the Context of Lifespan Growth and Development

· Assessment of Religious Function and Spiritual Needs

· The Spiritual Dimension of Clinical Practice:  Working with Spiritual and Religious Issues

Integrative Case Conference/Group Supervision

During all three terms, participants take turns presenting clinical case material of clients they are/or have seen in therapy.  This provides a forum for the on-going integration of theory and practice integrating the spiritual dimension in clinical work.

Individual Supervision

Individual supervisory hours with qualified supervisors who are also experienced pastoral counselors may be arranged for an additional fee and applied towards fulfilling Michigan State requirements for full licensure.

Continuing Education Credit

AAPC is approved by the National Board for Certified Counselors (NCCB) to offer continuing education credit.  Nine (9) CEUs may be gained upon completion of this AAPC approved training program.

Tuition and Fees

$1360 (includes a $60 non-refundable application fee)

Application Process

The application process involves completion of the application form and an interview (application deadline: August 1st).
